Water Resistance

Water resistance is not permanent. Seals age, while temperature changes, impacts and operation of the controls can affect the watch’s sealing performance.

01

The key point

“Water Resistant” means protection against water ingress only within the tested conditions.

02

Recommendation

Have water resistance checked regularly, especially before holidays or water sports and after an impact or service.

What do ATM / bar / metres really mean? Why “50 m” does not automatically mean diving to 50 metres
+
  • Ratings such as 30 m, 50 m and 100 m are laboratory test values measured under static pressure.
  • Real use introduces dynamic loads such as movement, spray pressure and temperature changes, which can be considerably more demanding.
  • When in doubt, use the watch conservatively.
Most common causes of water damageSeals, temperature, operation and chemicals
+
  • Ageing seals lose elasticity, especially through heat and UV exposure.
  • A crown that is not properly closed can compromise the seal.
  • Avoid operating the crown or pushers under water.
  • Strong temperature changes such as saunas, hot showers or cold exposure can be problematic.
  • Chlorine, salt water and aggressive detergents can attack seals.
  • Impacts can distort sealing surfaces slightly even without visible damage.
Care after water contactRemoving salt and chlorine correctly
+
  • Rinse the watch with fresh water after salt or chlorinated water and dry it.
  • Do not use aggressive soaps or degreasers.
  • Do not dry the watch on a radiator; room temperature is preferable.
  • Regular water-resistance tests materially improve safety.
Water-resistance testing & serviceWhen to have it checked
+
  • A pressure test checks whether the case, crystal, crown and seals still provide the intended protection.
  • Depending on model and condition, seals, crown or crown tube may need replacement.
  • Recommended before the water season or holidays, after an impact, after the watch has been opened and periodically according to use and age.
FAQShort answers
+
  • Showering: hot water and steam are demanding. Only with a suitable model in verified condition.
  • Crown/pushers under water: avoid as a rule.
  • Condensation under the crystal: indicates moisture. Stop wearing the watch and contact service.

This information is general guidance. The model specification, the actual condition of the seals and the individual service assessment always take precedence.
